Verse four, lines 1–4 says: “Fools, said I, you do not know Simon and Garfunkel wanted us to go talk to the hurt people. We are the man whose “darkness” we go to talk to, which implies sleep, because a dream we had the other night worried us, and we want to have that dream again to glean more answers from it. The song is written in first person, because those who listen to it are the person in the story. It seems to me that they were trying to shed some light on it, trying to convince those who aren’t hurt to go help those who are, and to convince those who’re hurt to speak up. Now, obviously I don’t know Simon and Garfunkel, but I feel like this is what their trying to say. The song is trying to draw attention to that, albeit in a sort of vague way. The song is addressed to both those who are hurt, and those who are not. In verse three, lines 3–5, it says: “People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share…” Who talks but isn’t really saying what they want to say? Who hears what is being said, but doesn’t actually listen? Who write down their feelings on paper, sometimes in the form of poetry, because they can’t find the right words to say out loud to others? The hurt people, those who are good at hiding their true feelings because their oppressing themselves from actually going out and telling what is actually going on. As I previously stated, the lyrics, I believe, are talking about those hurt. There are not many lines of lyrics to this song, as like with other modern day songs, There also isn’t a chorus to the song, just a repeated phrase, which is “Sound of Silence.” But take the time to analyze the lyrics, and what their meaning might be, and you find a whole different story.įirst off, there is audience. It’s a very riveting song, and the way it’s played by Disturbed I feel like captures the ambiance of the lyrics better than Simon and Garfunkel played it. The song starts out fairly slow, and builds to a crescendo by the end. I believe the lyrics are talking about the people of the world who have hidden hurts, trying to persuade us to do something about it and help. The rhetorical analysis I will be performing will be on Disturbed’s cover of this song for the genre and style, but the lyrics are where the real analysis will be done. It’s most recent cover was done by the heavy metal band, Disturbed, sung by their vocalist David Draiman. Originally written by the duo Simon and Garfunkel, it has since been remixed and covered by many.
